John Keegan taught me at Sandhurst mainly in 1966. He was already good at puncturing inflated assumptions about warfare, but this book published ten years later really struck home with me. I realised that military history had been far too much the preserve of retired officers trying to impose a staff college clarity on the reality of chaos and fear. I have therefore treasured this book and have been eternally grateful for its influence on the way I wanted to write Stalingrad and Berlin and D-Day. Antony Beevor London 2 February 2011.

Additional information

"This without any doubt is one of the half-dozen best books on warfare to appear in the English language since the end of the Second World War." - Michael Howard, The Sunday Times
