I read The Uses of Literacy in 1963 when I was in New York playing in the revue Beyond The Fringe on Broadway. It was a powerful reminder of home as Hoggart, though older than I am (and his family slightly poorer) had been brought up and educated in Leeds as I had. The book was a revelation to me in all sorts of ways but it showed me for the first time that my own background, which had always seemed to me dull and without interest, could also be made the stuff of literature.

Additional information
Although written in 1957 when Britain was undergoing huge social change, Hoggart’s landmark work has lost none of its pertinence and power today. Essential reading, both as a historical document, and as a commentary on class, poverty and the media.
